Latin Translation Exercise: Teo Torriatte by Queen

The 1976 hit off Queen's A Day At The Races, translated into Latin

I interpret this song as a sort of anthem towards the goal of international brotherhood, which is related to the philosophy of the modern study of the classics and all the good stuff I’ve been preaching on here for years. It’s a rare non-Mercury hit, which helps it to stand out that much more in my eyes. I used some major poetic license here: in the chorus, I thought it sounded better to use “immani vespere” to contrast the diminutive form of the word for “lamp” in order to inject a little more depth and intrigue into the line where the meter otherwise failed me. There’s also a linguistic connection between “immani” and “mane” (i.e. morning) that almost makes it wordplay if you don’t think about it too hard. Swapping out “immani” for “quieto” is totally fine in my book though. I think it would be interesting to have a version of this floating around where each instance of the chorus used 2-3 different translations of the poem at the heart of the song, rather than just Japanese and English, but that’s a task for someone more talented and connected than I am.
