Of the three million people a year who tour the ruins of Pompeii, how many truly understand its importance? As discussed in a prior article, this former city is an open archaeological exhibit. The digsite is truly a marvel to behold: of the 160 acres inside the city walls about a fifth remains unexcavated, mainly in regions I, III, V, and IX. I make no claim to be an arbiter of taste, but considering the sheer density of historical artifacts that have been uncovered there so far, it can be difficult to wrap one’s head around the minutiae. Therefore, I have resolved to identify some aspects of note in the exhibit’s history that may deepen an appreciation for its beauty.
